We are delighted to announce that the International Rugby Experience has been honoured as the grand prize winner, and category winner for sharing public spaces, at the prestigious Brick24 Awards. This recognition celebrates the architectural and cultural significance of the building, solidifying its place as a must-visit destination in Limerick.

A Cathedral of Sport

The International Rugby Experience, described as a "Cathedral of Sport," stands as a testament to the rich heritage and passion for rugby in Ireland. The inspiration behind the building is deeply rooted in the vibrant spirit of Munster rugby fans and the historical architecture of Limerick.

“We were inspired by pictures of red-clad Munster rugby fans flooding the streets after winning a game and we loved the idea of a cup-winning team standing on that balcony at some point showing off the trophy to the crowd,” says Tom McGlynn, partner at Níall McLaughlin Architects. But that wasn’t the sole inspiration. Another image was that of the many churches and public buildings in Limerick. The Rugby Experience refers to this existing fabric and towers like a cathedral above the neighboring houses, without denying the Georgian neighborhood, as there are connecting points throughout, from the building configuration to formal elements, right down to the brick surfaces.

Architectural Excellence

Our building is not only an homage to the sport of rugby but also a marvel of architectural innovation. The use of brick as a dominant material both inside and out creates a cohesive and striking visual impact. Nearly half a million hand-molded bricks were used to ensure the building blends seamlessly with its surroundings while also standing out as a landmark in its own right.
